This a true story of determination about a young girl who was born perfectly healthy until…
She got sick at 1 year 7 months old.
At that time, there was no cure for her illness.
This left her blind, deaf and unable to speak.
For the first few years of her life, she was isolated from the world and unable to communicate with others.
THE CHALLENGING SITUATION
She became frustrated and angry, lashing out at those around her.
She didn’t understand why this happened to her.
Was she being punished?
Was she cursed?
However, her parents refused to give up on her and hired a young teacher to work with her.
Her teacher was determined to find a way to communicate with her and spent countless hours trying to find a way to break through to her.
RESULT OF HARD WORK AND PERSEVERANCE
Finally, after much hard work and perseverance, her teacher was able to teach her how to communicate using sign language.
Just using her hands and creating shapes, her teacher would touch the shapes she made and was able to communicate with her.
Although her progress was slow, her teacher finally helped her to read and also write.
She learned to read braille.
(Braille is a system of raised dots that can be felt with the fingers. It allows people who are blind to read and write by feeling the different patterns of dots with their fingertips.)
Eventually, she was able to go to college and graduated cum laude.
She wrote several books throughout her life, including “The Story of My Life,” which has been translated into more than 50 languages.
She also worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those with disabilities and was a vocal advocate for the rights of the blind and deaf.
She became a well-known public speaker (using sign language) and traveled around the world giving lectures on a variety of topics, including her own experiences as a blind and deaf individual.
A TRUE STORY OF DETERMINATION
Her story is a testament to the human spirit and the power of determination.
Despite facing seemingly insurmountable obstacles, she was able to overcome adversity and achieve great things.
Her story continues to inspire people around the world to never give up, no matter how difficult the circumstances may seem.
This girl is Helen Keller.
“When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.”
― Helen Keller
Why am I telling you this story kabayan?
Some of us may be facing challenges in our lives.
But instead of overcoming those challenges, we would rather make up excuses to avoid them.
If you look at Helen’s life, she was given an insurmountable challenge.
The challenge of being blind, deaf and mute.
But some of us have perfect eyesight, can hear clearly, can speak, and yet we have so many excuses as to why we can’t achieve something.
EXCUSES
“I’m not techie.”
“I don’t have the budget.”
“I don’t know where to start. I have zero knowledge.”
“I don’t have a computer.”
“I don’t know how to write a book.”
These excuses are not even close to the disabilities Helen had and she found a way to overcome them.
The fact that you can see, hear and speak is already a gift.
Don’t waste those gifts.
Go find someone to help you, teach you, just like Helen.
She found a teacher, a mentor, who would sacrifice for her, take time to help her learn and discover how to overcome her disabilities.
What did Helen do with her disabilities?
She used them as a way to reach more people and touch their lives.
She inspired other disabled people to overcome their challenges despite their disabilities.
She was even able to write a book despite being blind, deaf and mute.
I hope this true story and testament to determination inspires you to take action and transform your life.
“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired, and success achieved.”
― Helen Keller
