Be honest with me, kabayan. Even though you are aware of how time-constrained your schedule is, you would still find it difficult to concentrate on your work, right? You have problem in maintaining focus.
I have both bad and good news for you if that is the case.
The good news is that this is something that many Filipinos go through.
The bad news is that handling it requires a lot of effort but is required if you want to have more free time.
And the troubles of the twenty-first century are the main cause of your potential attention issues.
MULTITASKING AND DISTRACTIONS!
You MUST learn how to cope with distractions and multitasking if you want to be able to concentrate and, more significantly, maintain your concentration; otherwise, you’ll constantly feel exhausted and as like there isn’t enough time in the day.
We are forced to multitask and work on several things these days since our schedules are so full of obligations.
However, because we live in the information era and depend on our phones for work, we are unable to entirely cut off from them in order to avoid becoming distracted.
I want to share with you a strategy that has shown to be effective for myself and my team in dealing with distractions and multitasking.
REEL IT IN METHOD
I’ll explain. The Reel It In Method aims to make your concentration muscles stronger. This is what you ought to do:
STEP 1: CLEAR YOUR MIND
Your natural reaction is to respond right away to any notifications or other items that are pertinent to your job.
Either reading an email, looking at a notification, etc.
And if the signal is work-related, it may cause you to multitask as you lose focus on what you were working on. Therefore, try this little exercise the next time you get a notification and are about to check it:
- Close your eyes.
- Breathe deeply and hold it for 5 seconds.
- Then exhale, picturing all the things your mind is holding onto being released as you do so.
- Try it a couple more times if you still can’t get your mind to relax. Feel your mind expanding as you exhale each time.
The next action you must perform is…
STEP 2: INSTANTLY INCREASE PRESENCE
Next, return to the current moment after completing the practice in Step 2.
You must now return to your initial attention in order to respond to the notification.
To do it, ponder the following inquiries:
- Keep in mind: What are you doing right now? What is your motivation?
- What must you accomplish to avoid wasting your time?
- What could I be doing right now that would be the most crucial?
- Is this diversion critical? Do I really need to take a break right now?
- Do I have to be concerned about it? Why?
- Will I eventually regret devoting time to this?
After responding to the preceding questions, you must then…
STEP 3: MAKE A DECISION
You must process a distraction if you want to put it aside permanently.
That implies that you must decide so that your mind is at ease regarding it.
The easiest way to accomplish it is to put everything on paper.
The idea is that once you write the notification or work demand you received down into a task, you tell your mind to forget about it.
Decide on a time each day:
- To complete your growing list of unrelated tasks.
- For example, one hour before getting ready for bed and 30 minutes after lunch.
- The goal is to cross things off your list as you complete them during the day to prevent overwhelm.
You commit to it when you set out a time to focus on your to-do list; you just don’t accomplish it right away. That’s the Reel It In Method!
I’m hoping that this approach will make it easier for you to manage distractions and multitasking.
