This “simple changes” article was written after many years of watching Filipino Christians struggle with money.
Naging malinaw that most Pinoy Christians, habang nagnanais na maging tapat sa Diyos pagdating sa pera, were handling it the world’s ways. They either thought like the world when it came to money, or they behaved like the world with money, or worse still, both!
Hindit ito dapat nakakagulat given the Church has too often ignored talking about money. Bilang resulta, karamihan sa atin are getting our money lessons from the world! No wonder we’re struggling!
Ang mabuting balita ay pagdating sa pera, the majority of Pinoy Christians don’t have money problems, mayroon silang management problems. Ibig sabihin, ang kawalan ng kita o kawalan ng trabaho ay hindi ang pangunahing isyu na kinakaharap ng karamihan sa mga Pilipino, but rather poor management of the resources God has blessed them with.
This usually stems from two key problems. Ang una ay iniisip nila ang pera sa parrang itinuro sa kanila ng mundo (halimbawa: The money is mine, I earned it and I will spend it the way I want), at ang pangalawang dahilan ay ang kanilang pag-uugali ay tulad ng mundo (halimbawa: they get into debt to fund their lifestyle, give little and save little).
This is good news! Why, because it is easy to fix.

- CONCLUSION
Ang kumbinasyon ng pag-aaral ng what God’s word actually says, at kung paano i-apply ito to your daily life will put you in the express lane to not only getting your finances on the right track, but also so that you can use the money God has blessed you with to build his kingdom, that is to say that your wealth can have a purpose!
All the changes I propose are simple, dahil hindi sila kumplikado. That doesn’t necessarily make them easy.
I am confident that by applying God’s word and the following simple changes into your life, you will be financially free.
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.1 – GET YOUR THINKING RIGHT
Maraming Pilipino ang nag-struggle with money for the simple reason that they are just not thinking about it the right way. Kapag inihanay natin ang ating pag-iisip sa salita ng Diyos, we release ourselves from many of the struggles associated with money. I love this passage:
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
Matthew 7:24
Hindi sapat na marinig lamang ang salita ng Diyos at kilalanin ito. We need to meditate on it and then apply it! Kailangan itong maging bahagi ng iyong pag-iisip. What do you think about? Especially when it comes to money?
WRONG THINKING
- Ito ay aking pera, pinaghirapan ko ito.
- Nandito ako sa maikling panahon, so it may as well be a good time.
- I don’t have enough. I can’t afford to give.
- Kaya kong gawin kahit anong gusto ko sa pera ko.
- The Government should provide for me – tingnan mo ang lahat ng mga buwis na aking binyaran!
- God doesn’t want Christians to have money.
RIGHT THINKING
- The money I have is really God’s money (Psalm 24:1)
- Use the money I have to build God’s kingdom (Matt 6:33)
- Focus on eternal things not earthly things (Colossians 3)
- God is our source of provision and a reliable one at that! (Luke 12:24) God gives us the ability to create wealth (Deuteronomy 8:17-18)
- Debt leads to slavery! (Proverbs 22:7)
- What you have is a blessing (Hebrews 13:5)
- God is a God of abundance, and he blesses us in order that we might be a blessing to others! (2 Corinthians 9:8)
- God desires for you to have financial freedom (John 8:32)
So how do you fix your thinking?
- Spend time with the King. Kung gusto mong baguhin ang iyong buhay, hindi lamang sa iyong finances, then you need to spend time in prayer – daily. God desires our intimacy, and wants us to seek him for direction.
- Read the Bible – daily. Mahirap magkaroon ng right thinking about money, kung maling materyales ang iyong binabasa. Pick up a normal money magazine these days and you will end up drowning yourself in debt. Karamihan sa mga advertisements are from banks offering loans and credit cards. Pick up the Bible and you will read the warnings about debt!
- Constantly Learn. Do a Christian course on money, and read Christian books about money.
- Don’t just believe in God, believe God. May pagkakaiba in believing in God (so does the devil) and actually believing God and what he promises.
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.2 – LIVE BELOW YOUR MEANS
We’re often told that to be successful financially requires us to live within our means. Mukhang magandang payo. Ngunit nais kong imungkahi sa iyo na upang maging financially free, you need to live below your means.
Gusto kitang hamunin na mamuhay sa 80% of what you earn. That is 80% of your after-tax income.
Sa 20% na hindi mo ginagamit, gusto kong gawin mo ang dalawang bagay. Give 10% to God, and put 10% towards long-term goals. Both of these are starting points not finishing points. As you become a better money manager, I want you to increase both of these, lalo na ang pagbibigay.
Few would disagree, na bilang mga Kritiyano we are called to live lives of radical generosity, but when we look at the statistics ang antas ng pagbibigay ay napakababa.
The second thing is to save and subsequently invest 10%.
To build wealth for kingdom purposes at upang pondohan ang long-term goals tulad ng iyong kid’s education, retirement and so forth, ay nangangailangan ng pagtabi ng pera.
Napapaligiran tayo ng napakaraming opportunities to spend money, that the majority of society lives month to month, without saving a dime. Sa batayang iyon most people in rich countries, are actually poor. Not poor due to lack of income, but poor because the moment they lose their jobs, they’d be bankrupt within about 30 days.
How do you get there?
- Do a Budget (more on that in a moment)
- Learn to live on less and be content, once you get use to it, you wont miss it
- Spend time evaluating your giving. Bukod sa iyong spiritual home which should be your first and primary giving spot (your local Church), pumili ng 2-3 other great Christian organisations, that you know intimately and automate your giving to all of them. Make it happen.
- Avoid income stealers. Utang, be it home loans or credit cards, which requires interest repayments, steal your income and lines the pockets of financial institutions.
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.3 – DO A BUDGET
“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying, ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish.”
Luke 14:28-30
What is a Budget?
A budget ay isang tool to help you track the money na pumapasok sa iyong household (i.e. income) versus the money na lumalabas (i.e. expenses). Tinutulungan ka nitong makakuha ng kalinawan sa kung paano ka gumagastos at malaman kung magkano ang natitira sa katapusan ng bawat buwan. Naturally you need a surplus, if not you’re going backwards, and getting into debt!
Why do a Budget?
A budget is your first act of Stewardship. Bilang Kritiyano ay tinawag tayo to be stewards of all God has given us, be it our intelligence, our athletic ability, special talents and of course the money he has blessed us with.
Budgeting works! Budgeting helps you to identify where your money is going, at tinutulungan kang matukoy kung makakamit mo ang iyong mga layunin sa financial. The key to successful budgeting is knowing and building your surplus. What you do with that surplus ay ang susi sa iyong financial future.
A budget ay isang mahusay na tool of self-awareness. You can’t become good with money kung hindi mo alama kung saan ito pumupunta. An obvious, yet overlooked truth! Pangalawa, it will help you ensure that you are honouring God with your money.
How do you do a Budget?
- Gumawa ng isang listahan of all your income sources (salary, dividends, interest)
- Gumawa ng isang listahan of all your expenses – be as detailed as possible.
- Put Giving to God at the top of your Expenses List – put God first in your life and that starts with your budget
- Calculate your surplus.
What does a good budget look like?
Here are some basic guidelines:
Accommodation Costs – panatilihin ang iyong mortgage or rent to no more than 30%. Any more than this and you will struggle to cover ang iba pang mahahalagang bahagi ng iyong budget.
Giving to God – bilang mga Kristiyano we are called to lives of extravagant generosity. Sa tingin ko 10% is a good place to start. It is not the limit, but the starting point. Habang tumataas ang iyong kita you can look at increasing it. I am amazed how many Christians lament the direction that the world appears to be heading, but then fail to give generously to kingdom organisations to change it!
Save 10% for Long-Term Goals – the main reason Pinoys failed to achieve long-term goals was that they simply not did save for the future. Stop making excuses at simulan ang pag-imbak ng pera for long-term goals.
Don’t delay, start now!
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.4 – PREPARE FOR A RAINY DAY
Nothing occurs more often that the unexpected! Pagdating sa pera, you are bound to have unexpected expenses on a monthly basis. But let’s take that one step further, what about unexpected events?
Narito ang aking tanong sa iyo. Kung nawalan ka ng trabaho bukas, how long could you maintain your living standards for without having to borrow or to rely on either Government or family support?
Nakakalungkot para sa karamihan ng mga Pinoy, the answer is just a few short weeks. In 2019, a certain Bank did a survey. The outcome was the was staggering, the average Filipino would run out of money in just 47 days.
The truth is God does not promise us an event free life. Sometimes bad things happen, we lose jobs, loved ones die and cars break down. These all require a stash of savings.
Nakalimutan na natin ang sining at disiplina ng pag-iipon. According to a Philippine Bank, in the 1970s, the average Filipino saved 16% of their disposable income. In the 2000s it was -3%. Oo, gumagastos sila ng higit sa kinikita nila and funding the difference with debt.
So how long could you last? There is an easy solution!
Start an Emergency Fund – Today!
An emergency fund is isang bank account lamang na may nakatagong pera para sa tag-ulan. It would make sense to have at least six months worth of living expenses set aside in a bank account.
The money should be highly liquid, that is it is accessible at short notice. The money should be kept in account that you can access within no more than 24 hours.
Para sa ilan sa atin, saving for six months of living expenses may sound like a big ask. But start saving for it now. With your new budget, set aside 10% of your net income towards long-term planning. Keep this money in cash until you reach 6 months worth of expenses for your emergency fund, then once you start getting above that, gamitin ang perang iyon para sa long-term goals.
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.5 – CREATE A WRITTEN FINANCIAL PLAN
No doubt you’ve heard people say “Pinoys don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan”. True words.
There are two key passages that should guide you in putting together your financial plans.
“Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.”
Proverbs 29:18
“He also gave him the plan for the chariot, that is, the cherubim of gold that spread their wings and overshadow the ark of the covenant of the Lord. “All this,” David said, “I have in writing as a result of the Lord’s hand on me, and he enabled me to understand all the details of the plan.”
1 Chronicles 28:18-19 (NIV)
Let’s unpack this:
1) Get a Vision for your Finances
Sa mundo ng negosyo, companies set both a Vision and a Mission. Ang Mission ay ang “why” the business exists, at kung ano ang ginagawa nito, at ang Vision ay ang “what” it will look like when the business achieves its Mission. Ang parehong prinsipyo ay naaangkop sa iyong personal finances. Your mission will cover many of your short-term and long-term goals, and you Vision will be the kingdom purposes that it achieves.
Think big picture: What are the eternal purposes for your Wealth? What do you believe God wants for your life? What is your assignment? Purpose?
Beneath your vision will be goals, both short-term and long-term, from saving for a home, paying for kids education, to funding retirement.
2) Put your Plan in Writing
The second passage points out the need to make a plan in writing with the help of the Lord’s hand. Ngayon nasa atin ang Banal na Espiritu bilang ating gabay. Seek His guidance for the plan and put it in writing.
A financial plan will be broken into various sections to make sure you cover all the key areas of your personal finances.
What should your plan include?
- Your Vision
- What is the Kingdom Purpose for your wealth?
- Goals
- Short-term (1 – 3 years)
- Medium-term (3 – 10 years)
- Long-term (10+ years)
- Budget
- What is your surplus?
- Does your budget honor God?
- Insurance
- Assess your needs
- Seek appropriate policies
- Is your family protected?
- Estate Planning
- Wills
- Powers of Attorney
- Who are you leaving God’s money too?
- Long-Term Goals
- Target Capital
- Kingdom Goals
- Investment
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.6 – PROTECT YOUR FAMILY
“A sensible man watches for problems ahead and prepares to meet them. The simpleton never looks, and suffers the consequences”.
Proverbs 22:3
Ang buhay ay puno ng mga hindi inaasahang pangyayari, bumps and bruises. It is the reality of living in a fallen world. We can however mitigate the impact of many of these events through the sensible use of insurance.
The philosophy around insurance is not that it will make you rich, but rather that it will prevent you from becoming poor.
Bawat taon, libu-libong Pilipinos are driven into a lower standard of living, because they simply failed to look ahead as the proverb suggests. Ang karamihan sa financial problems that Pinoys experience were entirely preventable, even if the events themselves weren’t.
Hindi kita mapipigilan na mawalan ng trabaho, but I can help you build an emergency fund, to prevent the impact of job loss. Hindi ko mapipigilan ang iyong bahay na masunog, but I can suggest insurance to replace it. Hindi ko mapipigilan ang pagkamatay mo, but I can prevent the financial impact on your loved ones. Paano? Insurance.
Pause for a moment and ask yourself these questions:
- If I died today, ano ang mangyayari sa aking mga anak, would they have to change schools, move home?
- If I got cancer and had to cease work for 6 months to get treatment, could I pay the mortgage or my rent?
- Kung nagkaroon ako ng matinding car accident, that meant I was no longer able to do my job, would I still be able to achieve any of my financial goals?
According to Statistics, roughly 30% of Filipinos can expect to spend at least 3 months off work before the age of 65.
What Now?
- Ask yourself, ano ang magiging financial impact on your family if something happened to you? Be it death or disablement.
- Gumawa ng listahan ng iyong current insurances and the level of cover
- Evaluate the level of cover versus what is really needed to meet the needs of your family in the event that you passed away or could not work for an extended period of time.
- Consider purchasing term life insurance and disability insurance if you do not currently have them.
- Adjust your policies or seek new policies accordingly
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.7 – AVOID DEBT
Consumption in today’s society consists of people buying things they don’t need, with money they don’t have, to impress people they don’t like”.
Clive Hamilton, Author – Affluenza
Debt is a thief. Ninanakaw nito ang iyong kinabukasan. Debt is consuming tomorrow’s income today. It is not an exaggeration to suggest that debt is destroying our economies with unprecedented debt levels amongst households and Governments.
Nakakalungkot na napakaraming pamilya, businesses and Governments have fallen for the world’s lie, that debt is necessary in order to maintain a certain standard of living.
The Bible provides ample warning about this, consider:
“The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower becomes the lender’s slave.”
Proverbs 22:7
Given the elevated nature of the debt levels in the world at ang daloy ng epekto nito sa mga lokal na ekonomiya, their growth levels and employment levels, Makatuwiran na suriin ng mga Kristiyano ang kanilang sariling levels of debt, their attitudes towards it and consider the potential impact that both their own debts and debts of their Government will have on them and their families.
Ask Yourself:
- Kailangan ko ba talaga ang utang na ito? or the asset that it allows me to own?
- Can I realistically repay it within a reasonable timeframe?
- Ano ang nag-udyok sa akin na mabaon sa utang? Did I do it for sensible reasons?
- Paano ito nakakaapekto sa aking mga relasyon?
- Have you fallen for the lie that debt is both normal and necessary in order to get ahead?
Become a Debt Destroyer
Narito ang mga siguradong paraan para mabilis na makawala sa utang:
1) Gumawa ng isang listahan ng lahat ng iyong mga utang
2) Put them in order from highest interest rate at the top, to the lowest interest rate at the bottom. Then put them in size order with the smallest (but highest rate) at the top, and then largest (but lowest rate) at the bottom).
3) Bayaran muna ang pinakamaliit na utang with highest rate first (most likely a credit card) and work your way down.
4) Ipagdiwang ang bawat utang na nabayaran! Ideally not by spending more on your credit card!
5) Gumawa ng Budget at gamitin ito upang matukoy:
a. What areas are wasteful and can be cut out
b. What additional repayments you can make against your debts
6) Switch from a credit card to a debit card, so you only spending money that you have actually saved!
7) Mangako na huwag nang mangutang muli! Save 10% of your net monthly income and put it to work so compound interest can do the heavy lifting.
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.8 – INVEST
I’ve already indicated in simple change no.2 that you should save at least 10% of your net income. I want to now take that one step further. The world’s way says to “borrow and consume”. God’s way is to “save and invest”.
Albert Einstein is believed to have said that “Compound interest is the greatest maths discovery of all time”. Sa tingin ko talaga ang isang mas mahusay ay multiplication. But lets explore both, as they are powerful concepts for money management.
Pagdating sa interes, may dalawang uri, simple interest at compound interest. Simple interest is where you earn interest only on the original principal. For example you can see that Php100,000 over a 12 year period would grow to Php160,000.
The Power of compound interest. Look at the power of starting with a Php100,000 investment and saving Php500 per month to it. In 30 years it would be worth over Php 1.3Million.
Lastly, and my favourite is invest in things that multiply.
Ngunit ano ang multiplication? Isipin sandali ang kahanga-hangang katawan ng tao na binubuo ng mahigit isang trillion cells. Starting from one cell, your cells have split millions of times over to form the organs and tissues that make up the human body. You are a walking miracle. This same concept of multiplication can be applied to many facets of life from ministry to business.
LTingnan natin ang dalawang modelo ng negosyo, one old school and one in our new internet area. McDonalds was commenced in 1955 and has grown to have more than 35,000 stores in 119 countries. Their multiplication model – Franchising. This model enables you to use the capital and entrepreneurial passion of other business owners whilst building your own business. Marami sa pinakamatagumpay na negosyo sa mundo ay mga prangkisa.
Sa panahon ng internet, we have Facebook, isa sa pinakamabilis na lumalagong negosyo of all time, with more than a billion users. Non-existent 20 years ago, it has multiplied many times over in its short life.
Hindi ito tungkol sa pagsisikap na hanapin ang susunod na Facebook o McDonalds, but more about encouraging you to research and invest in businesses that multiply. If the truth be known the best form of wealth creation in society has always been and still remains to be small business.
A great book by William Danko and Thomas Stanley by the name of the “The Millionaire Next Door” illustrates this point, na karamihan sa mga Pinoy na mayayaman ay ang nga maliliit na businesses next door, hindi ang mga Wall Street executives that the media likes to show.
In short – save 10% and invest in things that multiply!
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.9 – INVEST IN ETERNITY
Ang isa sa pinakamalaking pumapatay ng financial success is procrastination. The average age of people coming to see a Financial Planner was usually in their mid 50s. Ang problema sa edad na iyon, was if the finances were not in good shape, then it was difficult to fix by the time they were going to cease work.
The younger you are the better chance you have of getting your finances in good order. So don’t delay.
People should focus on the long-term. Ang talagang ibig sabihin ng isang financial planner kapag sinabi nilang dapat kang mag-invest for the long-term is to think about the years before retirement and the 20-30 years during retirement if you’re lucky.
Bilang isang mananampalataya, alam natin na ang buhay natin sa mundo ay maikli, napakaikli. The truth is, eternity is all that matters. So why not use the money that God has blessed you with, be it a little or a lot, to invest in building his kingdom.
Oo, dapat kang mag-plano nang maaga, you should plan to have sufficient finances upang kapag hindi ka na makapagtrabaho ay mayroon kang sapat to meet your needs, but don’t buy into the modern dream of retirement. It is a lie. Remain active, keep growing, and keep serving the King!
It is easy to fall into the trap that life is about stuff, and accumulating more of it. But as the bible says:
“Everyone comes naked from their mother’s womb, and as everyone comes, so they depart. They take nothing from their toil that they can carry in their hands.”
Ecclesiastes 5:15
As the parable of the talents suggests, we must use what God has given us to get a return on investment for God’s kingdom.
So join me and live for eternity!
SIMPLE CHANGES NO.10 – INTIMACY WITH GOD
Higit sa lahat, God desires intimacy with us, after all that is why he created us! He is building his kingdom and he wants to fill it with people who by their own free will, gustong maging bahagi nito. Hindi tayo pinipilit ng Diyos to follow him or to spend time with him.
Karamihan sa atin ay tinuruan na dapat tayong magdasal at magbasa ng Bibliya, but very few of us are taught how to have a deep and intimate relationship with the king of kings, at sa kadahilanang ito, one of the biggest issues in Church today when it comes to money is ‘fear’. Associated with this fear is a deep ‘poverty’ mentality and subsequent withholding of cash that God has blessed people with, that is simply not been used to fund the great commission.
I want argue that much of this fear stems from the fact that many of our fellow Christians ay hindi talaga nakakkilala sa Diyos. Yes, they know ‘about’ Him, but they simply don’t know Him. I know ‘about’ President Rodrigo Duterte from what I read and hear, but I don’t really know him, that would require me spending time with him.
Nakalulungkot, para sa maraming Pinoy na nakaupo sa Simbahan bawat linggo, hindi nila talaga kilala ang Diyos, kaya hindi sila nagtitiwala sa kanya, and because they don’t trust him, they worry about money.
When you build intimacy with God, and come to know his perfect character, his enormous power, his generous provision, his overwhelming love and mercy, then you will not fear. Mapupuno ka ng kagalakan at kaalaman na ang Diyos ay isang Diyos ng kasaganaan and provision and that he delights in blessing His people just the way any parent does when they do things for their kids.
Kapag ang aking mga anak ay bumangon sa umaga, they don’t spend a moment worrying about whether there will be breakfast, lunch or dinner available, they just ‘assume’ that it will be there. They have no reason to believe otherwise. Ngunit sa paglaki natin bigla na lang tayong mag-aalala tungkol sa kung ano ang kinabukasan, where money will come from and we forget that we have a supernatural father in heaven who is more than capable of meeting our needs.
So let me ask you a question. Kilala mo ba talaga ang Diyos? Naniniwala ka ba kapag sinabi niya:
- Put his kingdom first, and he’ll take care of the rest (Matthew 6:33)
- That he is able to bless you abundantly so that you can bless others (2 Corinthians 8-9)
- That he gives you good things to enjoy (Ecclesiastes 3:13)
- He rewards those who can be trusted be with the resources that he asks them to steward (Matthew 25:14-28)
How do you build intimacy with God?
- Spend time with God each day. Hindi lima hanggang sampung minuto lang. Iyan ang sasabihin ng karamihan sa mga Pastor, because they realise we are in this fast paced consumer society and they will rationalise that this is all most people can cope with. I would suggest kalahating oras minimum and build it from there. Oh, masyado kang busy? Kung gayon, huwag asahan na magaganap ang mga pagbabago. What you treasure, you will spend time doing.
- Some of the most successful entrepreneurs I know, take a full day each week to be with God. Yes, that is 20% of their working week that they devote to intimacy with God.
- Fast regularly. Fasting helps us to build intimacy with God.
- Read the Bible – each day, make notes, write down questions that you want answered and nag God until he answers. It is ok to nag God!
Don’t misunderstand what I am suggesting. Ang paggugol ng oras sa Diyos ay hindi tungkol sa pagkuha ng pera mula sa Kanya. Ito ay tungkol sa pagbuo ng iyong love, your faith and asking Him to guide your steps, so that you become a person of wisdom and character. If you live like that, the money will take care of itself. Spending time in the Bible will help you understand His character, His power and His love. Kapag naintindihan mo ito, fear will run from you! You will know what it means to truly trust the King of Kings.
Treasure God, He treasures you!
CONCLUSION
Good money management is simple, ngunit hindi madali. Simple in a way that it is a long way from rocket science at kahit sino ay makakabisado nito sa pamamagitan ng pagsunod sa few basic principles as laid out in this lengthy article. Ngunit hindi madali, dahil araw-araw ay napapalibutan tayo ng tukso at poor messages about money that distract or mislead us. It is hard not to be impacted by it.
So adopt the K.I.S.S. principle (Keep it Simple Silly). Ang pagiging kumplikado is an unnecessary enemy and usually expensive. Wise money management could be summarised with these principles:
- Live Generously – Give 10%.
- Save 10% & invest it.
- Protect your Family with Insurance.
- Do a Budget.
- Live beneath your means.
- Spend time with the King!
